The fireworks came early for the White Sox and Indians, but not in the form of the ones that shoot into the air from behind the scoreboard when the home team hits a home run. Instead, it was when the benches cleared after Adam Eaton took exception to Andres Gimenez knocking him off the bag after a head-first slide.
In the end, it was much to do about nothing and Eaton did not get the interference call he was lobbying for. After Eaton was called out at second base, Yoan Moncada singled to center field to score Tim Anderson to give the White Sox an early 1-0 lead.
Following up Carlos Rodon‘s no-hitter and his own stellar complete-game shutout in last Thursday’s home opener, Lance Lynn was cruising early on, taking a shutout into the sixth inning.
Jose Ramirez broke up the shutout and gave Cleveland the lead with a two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning, scoring Andres Gimenez.
“For the most part everything went well,” said Lynn in the post-game media availability in reference to the Ramirez home run in the sixth inning. “One mistake cost us the game today. I’d like to have that one back.”
The Ramirez homer would as Lynn said be the deciding factor ultimately despite Cleveland tacking on a pair of runs in the later innings. Prior to the Ramirez home run in the sixth Lynn has strung together 14 consecutive scoreless frames and the starting rotation as a whole has held Cleveland scoreless for 21 straight innings.
Despite taking a loss on Thursday Lynn struck out 10 Cleveland hitters over the course of six innings of work while walking none. Lynn struck out 21 opposing hitters while allowing zero walks in two starts (15.0 IP) on the current homestand.
Luis Robert scored on a Tim Anderson ground ball up the middle that was scored an E6, but probably should have been a base hit, which would have been his third of the game.
The White Sox fall to 6-7 on the season and will head to Boston to take on the Red Sox in a four-game series beginning tomorrow night with Dylan Cease likely to make the start after passing his COVID-19 testing.
