The Chicago White Sox continue to fare well during the 2020 Major League Baseball award season, this time with Jose Abreu, Tim Anderson and Eloy Jimenez each winning Silver Slugger Awards on Thursday night.
Abreu, 33, slashed .317/.370/.617 with 19 home runs, 60 RBI, 167 wRC+, and 2.6 fWAR in 60 games, leading the charge as the White Sox crushed a 12-year playoff drought. Abreu racked up 148 total bases, 34 extra-base hits, and 21 multi-hit performances this season. Simply put, Abreu was absolutely out of this world for almost all of 2020.
Abreu was already named the 2020 American League Outstanding player and the Sporting News Most Outstanding Player of 2020 in late October. Abreu is up for another honor next week, the American League’s Most Valuable Player Award.
This is Jose Abreu’s third American League Silver Slugger Award (2014, 2018). The American League MVP Award will be announced on November 12.
Tim Anderson for much of the season was considered neck-and-neck with Jose Abreu for a potential run at the American League MVP Award, and his second consecutive batting title.
Unfortunately, a skid down the stretch all but ended those hopes, but nonetheless, Anderson put together a hell of a season in 2020. The swaggy Sox shortstop hit .322/.357/.529 with 10 homers with a 143 wRC+ in 49 games as he anchored the top of the order for Chicago.
This is Tim Anderson’s first Silver Slugger Award and Anderson became the first White Sox shortstop to win the award since Alexei Ramirez did so in 2014.
Eloy Jimenez followed up his monster rookie campaign with another strong showing at the plate en route to his first Silver Slugger Award in 2020, and likely not his final.
Jimenez launched 14 home runs and posted a .891 OPS for the White Sox, and he’s now sitting at 45 home runs in just 177 games at the major-league level.
